The phrase “wine country” may not prompt you to think of the rocky coast of Maine. However, a growing number of winemakers have realized that the state’s moderate ocean climate makes for happy grapes. Therefore, like the rest of Maine’s culinary scene, the last twenty years have seen an explosion in wine production. After all, gourmands need something to pair with all that delicious seafood. Luckily for you, there are some great wineries and breweries close to Elms of Camden. If you care to sample some wine, beer, or ale, see beautiful wineries, or learn how it’s all made then read on.

Perhaps the best-known winery in the area is Cellardoor in Lincolnville. Cellardoor is a beautiful winery and produces amazing wines. They also have a great story on how they “found” their logo.

“As the story goes, a hobo, a traveler looking for work nearly 100 years ago, visited our farm in Lincolnville. He was welcomed. He felt safe. Upon his departure, he carved in the barn door a “hobo symbol” to let fellow travelers know they would find hospitality here.

All these years later, we have proudly embraced, and are motivated by, this story and the spirit of welcome meant to be offered to guests. While the door with the fabled hand carving is treasured, we have adopted a current day artist’s interpretation of it as our logo. It is our inspiration to beat our guests’ expectations, to offer a respite from busy lives.

When you see our Hobo symbol, know that you are in a safe and friendly place. We invite you to our Cellardoor properties with open hearts, generosity, and camaraderie. Whether you join us for a tour of our winery, a wine tasting, a food & wine pairing, or one of our big events, we hope you enjoy your time with us.”

Located just 12 miles from Elms of Camden, the Pour Farm in Union, ME is dedicated to brewing fresh beer in Maine using local ingredients. The owner, Bill Stinson, has been making beer and experimenting with different styles since 1987. The present brewery started producing small batches of ale in 2018 and grows hops and other botanicals for the beer. The brewery has six taps and will have three or four standard offerings, with an additional two experimental or rotating beers on tap at a given time. If you are interested in the craft of small-batch beer then definitely check them out. The Pour Farm is an easy, 15-minute drive from Elms of Camden.

Savage Oakes Vineyard and Winery currently grows ten varieties of cold hardy hybrid wine grapes. The first block of four varieties was planted on two acres in 2002. During the next three seasons, they expanded to almost four acres with approximately 1800 vines. The site on which the vineyard is located provides an ideal location for grape production. The south-facing sloping hillside catches long hours of sunshine essential for ripening, while the ever-present breezes maintain the airflow needed for vine health and frost protection.

April showers bring May flowers. It’s a saying we’ve all heard and that’s because it’s true. Up here in Maine, April is called “Mud Season” for a reason. The snow melts, rains come, and it gets muddy. But that’s okay because in May a whole new world emerges, full of every color, shape, and size imaginable. That world is flowers, trees, shrubs, and gardens. Some assume that because Maine gets so cold we don’t have a lot of variety when it comes to gardening but au contraire. The colors are amazing with everything from small flowering ground cover to dinner-plate size dahlias. We have it all. Here are a few noteworthy public gardens and nature centers that are worth a look when in Camden!

Maine State Parks

There’s no denying the natural beauty of Maine. It’s spectacular regardless of Season. But during Spring and Summer, it begs you to be outside. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, biking, swimming or enjoying a picnic while reading or soaking in the sun there’s no better place to be than at a Maine State Park. As we approach warmer temperatures it seemed fitting I blog on Maine State Parks that are an easy drive from Elms of Camden. Definitely check out their website links for more information but I guarantee there’s a park or two just for you! The picture above is from Camden Hills State Park and since it’s the most famous that’s where we’ll start.

Located three miles from Elms of Camden, Camden Hills State Park is not to be missed. Made famous by the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, the view from the top of Mt. Battie is one of the most spectacular in the world!! You can hike the trail or auto road or drive to the top. Once at the top, you can see Camden, the many islands surrounding Camden Harbor, other mountains, and on a clear day Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park. Climb to the top of the WW1 Monument and read about Edna St. Vincent Millay and her poem Renascence. This is a must-see when in Camden.
Was three long mountains and a wood;
I turned and looked another way,
And saw three islands in a bay.
So with my eyes I traced the line
Of the horizon, thin and fine,

Straight around till I was come

          Back to where I’d started from;

About a 30-minute drive from Elms of Camden, Birch Point State Park is the perfect setting for those looking to spend a day in peaceful serenity. Walk the crescent-shaped beach and enjoy the gentle surf. At either end of the beach, follow a short path to check out beautiful enclaves, smooth bedrock, and dunes of cobblestones and pebbles. Both 0.1-mile trails offer panoramic views of Penobscot Bay and the islands that dot the mid-coast region. Relax along the ocean, comb the beach, take in the abundant wildlife, go for a swim or try your hand at shore-line fishing. Birch Point provides the perfect leisurely getaway. And as a bonus, it’s right next to Owls Head Lighthouse!

Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site is a publicly owned historic property operated by the state of Maine near Pemaquid Beach in Bristol, Maine. The site includes the reconstructed Fort William Henry, archaeological remains of 17th- and 18th-century village buildings and fortifications, and a museum with artifacts found on the site including musket balls, coins, pottery, and early hardware.[3]

Pemaquid was a major regional flashpoint in the late 17th-century and early 18th-century conflicts between English and French settlers, and between English settlers and the local Native population. The site has been of historical and archaeological interest since the late 19th century and has been a state park since 1903. Fort William Henry is a 45-minute drive from Elms of Camden.

Located on the west bank of the Penobscot River in Prospect, Maine, in an area known as the Penobscot Narrows, Fort Knox is one of the best-preserved military fortifications on the New England seacoast. The fort has many unique architectural features, as well as a rich history behind its walls.

During the country’s infancy, Maine was repeatedly involved in northeast border disputes with British Canada. In fact, the area between Castine and the rich lumber city of Bangor was invaded and occupied by the British during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the Penobscot River Valley against a possible future British naval incursion. Fort Knox is an easy, 45-minute drive from Elms of Camden and if you enjoy military forts and history, this is not to be missed.

Damariscotta Lake was formed more than 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. This glacial lake boasts 4,600 acres of pristine water with normal visibility of 10 feet or better, making it a great place to cool off. Although there is no public boat launch in the state park, many are located nearby on the lake. Swimming is allowed and encouraged, and canoes, kayaks, and rowboats are often seen on the water.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, sit back and enjoy a picnic lunch by the water. Picnic tables and grills are available within the park, and a group picnic shelter is equipped with electricity and running water. To reserve the shelter during summer months, contact the park staff. If you are looking for a large lake with a beach for swim and sun this one is for you! Damariscotta Lake is about a 40-minute drive from Elms of Camden.

There are over 80 state parks in Maine and I was going to list four of them but I ended up with five. I couldn’t decide which one to omit so what the heck. I hope you have learned a little about some of the state parks in Maine and will visit one of them during your travels in Maine.

Museums – Something for Everyone

Most people don’t use world-class museums and Camden in the same sentence but they should. We are fortunate to have some amazing museums and not just for art lovers. These are great activities for a rainy day or for anyone who is inspired by art, the history of transportation, and lighthouses. Here are my four top museums that should be on your list of “must-see” things to do.

Once you pass through these doors at One Park Drive in Rockland, Maine you will enter the Maine Lighthouse Museum, home to the largest collection of lighthouse, lifesaving, and U.S. Coast Guard artifacts in the nation, founded by the late CWO4, Ken Black.

The mission of the Maine Lighthouse Museum is to educate the public regarding the long-standing traditions, heroism and progress of America’s Lighthouse and Lifesaving services and the United States Coast Guard through the conservation and interpretation of the nation’s most significant collection of lighthouse and lifesaving artifacts. The Center for Maine Contemporary Art has been supporting, exhibiting, and sustaining arts and artists with ties to Maine since its founding in 1952. In that time, CMCA has grown from a scrappy upstart presenting shows in barns and backrooms to become the state’s preeminent contemporary arts organization, hosting a slew of internationally-known artists along the way. With its new space in the heart of downtown Rockland, CMCA extends its reach exponentially, allowing it to continue its mission on a whole new level. Read more about their story and mission

Founded in 1974, the Museum is a place where machines of a bygone era are celebrated through conservation, preservation, and demonstration. Unlike many museums, OHTM’s collection is primarily operational, offering visitors a spectacular and rare experience at a number of outdoor events throughout the year. Care and maintenance of these historic vehicles aircraft requires the attention of a small but mighty staff and an extensive, dedicated volunteer network. Read more about their story and history

I definitely have the “sweet tooth” gene, which I inherited from my mother. After almost every dinner, I can still hear her saying “I need something just a little sweet.” And yes, Snicker’s do satisfy but there are times when I (and I assume you) want something really good, unique, decadent, hand-made, and a truly sweet treat. Don’t worry, there are four places near Elms of Camden that satisfy on all levels. And what I think is another plus, they are all locally owned and operated small businesses.

If you want to walk into a true candy store and be reminded of one from 20+ years ago this is your place! Row after row after row of every type of candy and sweet imaginable. It’s almost like Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, minus the Oompa Loompas. They have suckers, mints, chocolates, PEZ, wax lips, tarts, fruit gels, nuts, hard candy, soft candy, and the list goes on and on. It’s as bright and colorful and as the name implies, a haven for candy enthusiasts. The hardest part will be deciding which candies and chocolates to get but I highly recommend the handmade Almond Butter Crunch! One tip for you, they have a second floor that has the largest selection of Jelly Belly Candies I’ve ever seen. If you’re interested in their history and how they began, click

I recently discovered this company in Rockland and OMG, the chocolate is amazing. They pride themselves in hand-crafted confections and even offer vegan chocolates. I’ve always preferred milk chocolate over dark but after one bite of their dark chocolate sea salt caramels, I’ve become a dark chocolate believer. Take the tour, try some samples, and I guarantee you’ll leave with a bag or two of pure decadence. Read how they got started and their mission

When James and I got married Sweet Sensations made our cupcakes and carrot cakes. We were not disappointed! Located in Rockport (about a 5-minute drive from Elms of Camden) this is a great spot for cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and other tempting items. They also serve a great lunch with handmade sandwiches, quiche, and salads. They also have a nice selection of coffee that goes perfectly with one of their brownies. Just sayin’.

What do Kathy Mattea, Derek Gripper, Ranky Tanky, Palaver Strings, Bee Parks and the Hornets, Cold War, Tim Sample, The Hal McIntyre Orchestra, Mile Twelve and Low Lily, On The Basis of Sex, Odeon Chamber Orchestra, and Donizetti’s La Fille Du Regiment have in common? They are all entertainers, movies, or operas appearing at one of three amazing event venues in Camden, Rockport, or Rockland.

When we moved to Camden I thought I was leaving the chance to see great live concerts and performances. How wrong I was! I have been amazed at the variety of shows we have attended over the past 18 months. And talk about reasonable ticket prices! There truly is something for everyone at an unbeatable cost. From orchestras, comedians, dance troupes, child prodigies, intellectual conferences, jazz, bluegrass, rock n roll, country, Gullah, Irish Celtic, circus clowns, illusionists, and Acappella groups it’s all here in and around Camden.

The Camden Opera House was built in 1894 and was once the tallest building in Knox County. The massive building was also home to several businesses and a businessman’s club. Willis Carleton, a lifelong resident of Rockport decorated the interior, including stereo relief gold and white on the stage arch, balcony front, and loge boxes. Fully restored, the Camden Opera House is stunning and takes you back in time to concert halls from the past century yet having great acoustics, comfortable chairs, and shows ranging from circus clown performances, jazz, international conferences, comedians, rock n roll, magicians, and every other genre out there. And the best part, it’s a 4-minute walk from Elms of Camden!

During the 1930s, the great philanthropist Mary Louise Curtis Bok chose Rockport, Maine as the summer home of her world-class music conservatory, the Philadelphia-based Curtis Institute of Music. Illustrious musicians from all over the world came to the area to teach and give concerts in July and August in this historic fishing and boat-building village. Performances were held in a converted boat barn in Rockport, giving the mid-coast the distinction of hosting one of the earliest of American summer music festivals.

organization. It was a lot of fun, a lot of hard work, and a lot of money was raised for a good cause. Being the fool I am, I volunteered to make and distribute samples of pie for the Saturday event in Camden at our B&B. You know I love to cook, bake, and eat so this type of event had my name written all over it! Pie oh my! During the event, several people asked for the recipe so I promised my next blog would be my Lemon Chess Pie recipe. So, keeping my promise, here it is.

I decided to make one of my favorites from my days in Texas, a Lemon Chess Pie. I do not discriminate when it comes to pie. I like chocolate, coconut, apple, blueberry, mixed berry, peanut butter, well you get the idea. But, I do love lemon. I guess it’s the combination of sweet and tart mixed together. To me, it’s just perfect. What I didn’t expect was how many people said “chess, you meant chest or cheese.” No, chess. I guess some Yankees need to be schooled in Southern cooking. Then I realized I didn’t know why it was called

           Lemon Chess

; it just was. So for your education and mine, I found this online:

“No one has ever been able to determine how chess pie came about its name, but the colorful explanations make for great table conversation.

Some say gentlemen were served this sweet pie as they retreated to a room to play chess. Others say the name was derived from Southerners’ dialect: It’s jes’ pie (it’s just pie). Yet another story suggests that the dessert is so high in sugar that it kept well in pie chests at room temperature and was therefore called “chest pie.” Southern drawl slurred the name into chess pie. Or, perhaps, a lemony version of the pie was so close to the traditional English lemon curd pie, often called “cheese” pie, that chess pie became its American name.”

Regardless, it’s a perfect lemon pie that is easy to make and is great by itself or if you must, add some vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top or on the side. It’s also a very forgiving pie with the ingredients. If you add a bit more flour or cornmeal it’s okay. Some recipes use buttermilk, vinegar, lemon zest, or cocoa powder instead of lemon (Chocolate Chess). You can make your pie crust or use one store-bought, both work well for this pie. Whichever you use, I put the filling in a

pie shell. I made my filling in a stand mixer using a glass bowl and the whisk attachment. Feel free to use a hand mixer and a large mixing bowl.

          1.5 Cups Sugar
1/2 Cup Lemon Juice (I only use lemons or Minute Maid 100% Premium Lemon Juice)
1/4 Cup Melted Butter
Zest from One Lemon
1 Tbsp Flour (All Purpose)
1 Tbsp Yellow Cornmeal
1/8 Tsp Salt

In a large bowl beat, or whisk, the eggs for three minutes. Gradually add sugar and beat for two more minutes. The mixture should get thick and lemon-colored. Add in the lemon juice, zest, butter, cornmeal, flour and salt, and mix until combined (about one minute). Pour mixture into frozen pie shell and bake at 350 for 35 – 40 minutes. I baked mine for 37 minutes. When done the middle will be jiggly, that’s okay. Cool the pie for

Grape Nut Pudding

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to do a food blog. I guess because I’m not a chef and my previous career was all about wireless telecommunications and nothing about food. But after cooking thousands of breakfasts a year for guests I know when a plate comes back clean time after time, it’s popular.

So after promising to many guests that I would start to share some of my recipes I decided today would be the day for my first food blog! So here it is, my very first food blog. And it’s about Grape Nut Pudding. Never heard of it? Neither had I.

A few months ago some dear friends (Michael and Steve) were visiting from Dallas and we went to Moody’s Diner. One of the menu items was Grape Nut Pudding and none of us were familiar with such a dish. The waitress was kind enough to bring us a sample to try. It was good and we all liked it but I kept thinking it could be a great first course. But it needed a few tweaks.

Here’s the story on how Grape Nut Pudding came to be:

America went mad for breakfast cereals in the late 1800s, when the Kellogg brothers founded the Battle Creek Sanitarium and Sanitas Food Company, advocating a diet rich in whole grains. Rival cereal maker C. W. Post, a former patient at Battle Creek, created Grape-Nuts in 1897. This is a regional New England dish still popular in local diners and truck stops.

Here’s the recipe on the Farmer’s Almanac page that I used. Here’s what I do differently:

It’s very healthy, dairy-free, and something most people have never had. I hope you try it and if you have any questions feel free to send me an email. Better yet, come for a visit and I’ll make some for you.

Fall Foliage – Maine’s Fifth Season

There is no better place to be for fall leaf peeping than in Maine. The melting of hues of leaves from green to yellow, to burnt orange and crimson begins as early as mid-September in Fort Kent in northern Maine, and as late as Halloween in Kittery, at Maine’s southern tip. The vibrant process begins in August as the warm weather wanes and Maine’s 57 species of broadleaved trees begin preparing for autumn. Instead of slipping quietly into hibernation, nature trumpets the bright oranges and yellows of sugar maples, the purples of white ash, the scarlet of red and mountain maples, and the rich, earthy browns of black and white oak. Few sights satisfy the soul like the brilliant colors splashed across Maine’s forests each autumn.

Elms of Camden – How it All Started

When your bed and breakfast is in one of the oldest homes in town you get asked a lot of questions about its history, its former owners, who built the house, etc.. I wish I had all the answers starting from 1806, but pictures and documents aren’t as available from that era. If only Kodak and Adobe had been around. But I will tell you what I know and share some pictures, history, and interesting facts about the home and its past.

The home was built in 1806 by Capt. Calvin C. Curtis. His father, also Calvin Curtis, lived in Hanover, MA and his son moved to Camden in the late 1700s or early 1800s. He married and had four children; three sons and one daughter. The two eldest sons sailed off to find fortune and were never heard from again. The youngest son, John C. Curtis, remained in Camden and was a successful businessman and community leader. Here’s a

Here some interesting facts about the house that we have discovered:

James and I are the fourth B&B owners at the property and are amazed at the craftsmanship used to build the house. A contractor gave us some of the original hand-forged steel nails and they are still “tough as nails” even after 212 years. The original support beam of the house was a sailing mast from an 1805 whaling ship. It still remains in the basement today.

Camden – A Photographer’s Dream

There are many ways to discover the beauty of Camden, but through the lens of a camera can be one of the most exciting. Whether it’s the seemingly endless species of large and small animals, birds, flora, fauna, or the breathtaking land and seascapes, your camera can be a tool for seeing the unusual and remarkable. Pictures are also a great way to memorialize your visit and share your adventures with family and friends.

One of my favorite places to photograph is

, it’s never the same and there is always something to catch your eye. The view from the wharf is unbeatable, and I find that the light is best just at sunrise when the colors of the sky and water are at their most intense.

          The top of

is also a perfect spot for photography. No matter what time of day or what the weather conditions you will be sure to capture beautiful images of the mountains, the bay and of the village below.

is another perfect spot to capture the water and boats in the harbor. You can kick off your shoes and wade into the water on a hot afternoon. The rocky beach itself offers wonderful opportunities for creative photographs.

With all the beauty in and around

, you won’t have any difficulty in finding your perfect subject, in fact, the only worry you might have is filling up your memory card before your visit ends!

To continue with the …ING theme this blog is about one of the most popular activities in Camden, sailING. Being on the harbor, we have some of the most incredible yachts, schooners, lobster boats, and every other type of sea vessel you can think of.

As an innkeeper one of the most frequently asked questions we receive from our guests is “what should we do while we are here?” And while there are dozens of great things, one we always recommend is a schooner cruise. Some are newer and some are historical. In fact, the

. Both schooners have a great crew and it’s a great way to see the harbor, islands, lighthouses, and of course Mt Battie from the sea. You also learn some of the history of the ships and of the ships lost at sea. We highly recommend both of these schooners and it’s only a five-minute walk to the harbor from Elms of Camden.

Beaches, Picnics, and Swimming

How can it be that I’ve lived in Dallas and Kansas City and I thought it was HOT last week. It was only 88 degrees but it was hot. And humid! So after a morning of fixing breakfast, check-outs, errands, deliveries, etc. I asked James where could we go swimming. It’s not like we are surrounded by water! And we rediscovered a few favorite places for swimming, going to a beach, enjoying a picnic lunch, reading a book, doing whatever. They weren’t crowded and the water felt great!

Popular with locals, this is a great spot to launch a kayak, go swimming, or wade in water that’s only one foot deep 15 feet from shore. There’s a nice sandy bottom and the water is clean. There are grills on a first-come basis, picnic tables, parking, and lots of big shade trees. And seven minutes from Elms of Camden.

Only five minutes from Elms of Camden, Laite Memorial Beach is one of our favorite spots to go to and wade in the water or swim to the swim dock. There are great views of the harbor and Mt. Battie. It can get crowded, especially on holidays or weekends but there is plenty of room and the sea water is stunning.

It’s hard to believe but it was one year ago today we closed on The Elms, now Elms of Camden! Talk about a year flying by at warp speed. We thought we’d share with you, our guests, former guests, future guests, friends, family, and neighbors what we’ve done to the property in this, our first year. We have:

painted the exterior of the house with a new color scheme.

launched a new website, reservation system, and booking engine by Odysys.

installed a ridge vent over the cottages.

installed fireplaces in every room but one (to preserve the 1806 fireplace and cooking stove.)

changed the bed in Dahlia from a Queen to a King.

updated every room with new linens, lighting, furniture, and decor.

added custom-made cushions and window coverings in certain rooms.

added a custom-built radiator cover for the entryway.

            installed new exterior light fixtures.

Of course, none of this would have been possible were it not for such guests such as Catharine C, Joe & Ellen, Beth S, James M, Michael and Steve, Alvaro M, Dorrie S, Jane D, Norman P, Janice Q, Padriac W, Troy B, Douglas A, and the hundreds of other incredible guests and people who have graced our doorstep. Special thanks to Odysys, Bob & Cat H., Jim and Cyndi O, and fellow Camden innkeepers who have welcomed and embraced us in our journey from Kansas to Maine!

We are humbled and honored to have had all of you in our house and look forward to seeing you again for many years to come!!!

Hiking in Camden

Has it really been a month since my last blog? What have I been doing? Oh, I remember, shoveling snow, and more snow, then more snow. And maybe more snow next week. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful and the Maine DOT have it going on when it comes to keeping the roads plowed and clear. But, enough is enough.

With all this snow, my thoughts of Spring grow stronger and more hopeful each day. And that got me thinking of all the activities there are to do in Camden and surrounding areas during Spring and Summer. Hiking. Kayaking. Fishing. Rock Climbing. Biking. Running. Sailing. Eating. Painting. Reading. Sleeping. Bird Watching. Gardening. Swimming. Boating. Drinking. Thus the …ING.

So this blog, part of a series, is dedicated to hikING. Simply put, the hiking is incredible. Only recently have I discovered the vast number of trails in the area. Some are for the more experienced hiker but most are for the basic or moderate hiker. And all are beautiful. If you are interested in hiking and are new or want to learn the basics here is a great

We truly enjoy helping them plan their day, advice on where to eat, what events are going on, etc. Very soon we will be putting together some small extras that will make your stay even more convenient for anyone wanting to take a day trip or spend a day in the great outdoors.

My how time flies. One minute its Trick-or-Treaters, Pilgrims, and Presents and then boom, Amore! Valentine’s Day! And that got me thinking that I didn’t know much about Saint Valentine or the history so, in an effort to shed some light on this mysterious Saint Valentine for others who may not know, I offer this article of information.

          THE LEGEND OF ST. VALENTINE

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and–most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would become one of the most popular saints in England and France.

After reading the above article, perhaps you know more than you did 45 seconds ago.

On the topic of love, not a day goes by where James or I will look at the other person and say “can you believe we are here, we live here, we are really here.” We love this place. This town. This community. Some friends wondered how I would cope not being in a corporate environment. To be honest I am. I use all of my corporate and technology skills, and have even improved upon some. I’ve even bought high-end software that I thought I was done with for good. So on that point Elms of Camden now has a YouTube channel! It’s not the largest and not the best but it’s a start. And every great love story has to have a beginning. The art of making a video, and it’s an art, is one that takes patience and a willingness to have 45 draft or unfinished versions before you find “the one” you are happy with. Like love, you have to find the one. See how I’m tying these things in with love? Pretty clever. So without further adieu, here is a short video what a romance theme. I hope you like it. If you don’t, it’s only 26 seconds so you’ll survive.

‘Tis the season to wish you all, however you celebrate, a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Happy Kwanza……………….

Both of us at Elms of Camden thanks you for a wonderful start to what we hope are many, many more years in Camden. For this we are proud and grateful! As importantly, in the spirit of the season, share with you with the following words from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” is a Christmas carol based on the 1863 poem “Christmas Bells” by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who was born in Portland Maine. The song tells of the narrator’s despair, upon hearing Christmas bells, that “hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth, good will to men”. The carol concludes with the bells carrying renewed hope for peace among men.”

The most wonderful gift we can all wish for is, “Let peace on earth, good will to…all” be our mantra, our hopes and our prayers for today, tomorrow, 2018 and beyond.

We are officially in the off season and James and I have some time to breathe and think about goals and projects for 2018. Part of that is marketing. The lodging industry is complex and getting more and more complicated with various online travel agencies (OTAs), social media, technology, competition, and other factors. So if you are reading this and have been a guest a big THANK YOU. I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat it, we have had the most amazing guests!! Joe, Ellen, Bella, James, Pam, Kieran, Catherine, Jane Anne, Janice Q, Oscar, Michael M, and on and on and on. When we receive an email, Christmas card, or heated pet beds for Sadie and Tinker it touches our heart and soul. Side note, Sadie and Tinker LOVE them!!!!

Our goal is simple: make Elms of Camden the best bed & breakfast it can be; warm, friendly, fun, nicely-appointed, convenient, comfortable, historic, affordable, relaxing, charming, safe, energetic, full of love and laughter, and enduring. If you’ve stayed with us, we probably asked for feedback, which we value. Some provided great examples of things to improve upon or things to add or make better. We listened and most of the time we agreed. Could we put a night light in Aster? Yes, and we did. Could we put another mirror in Violet? No, we put two additional mirrors in Violet. When we started painting the exterior we witnessed a miracle. Every single person, and I mean EVERY SINGLE PERSON, loved the color, the shutters, and trim. When was the last time you did a renovation project and it was met with unanimous approval? We agree, it is a great color, and don’t worry, the rest of the house will be painted in the Spring. So, next time you visit, and if you think of something that we could improve or would be a “good thing”, let us know. We will always listen.

Back to marketing. Our primary focus is, and will always be, on two things; the guest experience and ensuring our website is accurate, responsive, and easy to use. We try to update the website as often as possible with updated pictures, blogs, etc. And we hope that when we greet you at your car, enjoy a glass of wine or tea on the patio, answer any questions you have regarding the property, recommend a place to eat, or advise you to please be careful when stepping off curbs, it’s because we are truly glad you have chosen to spend your time away from home with us and you would do the same. Yes, we will use social media, and be a part of various organizations, and spend money here and there, but our guests will always be our primary focus.

Earlier in the year, we were asked by several people if we had any packages or add-ons. We didn’t. We purchased the property on July 27 and hit it running fast and furious. But now that we’ve had some downtime I’m happy to report we’ve added some packages that I hope are well received. Not only will they save you time and money but hopefully will make your stay truly unforgettable. You can find our packages on the home page of our website near the bottom. To save you time, click

My first blog! I feel so grown up. It’s hard to believe we purchased the B&B only 4 months ago, it feels like a year has passed. In the Spring there will be blogs about restaurants and eating, kayaking and hiking, biking and sailing, but that time is not now. It’s December 1 and Winter is knocking on our doorstep. When I think of Winter I think of snow, hot chocolate, a roaring fire, and outside activities such as skiing, ice skating, sledding, snowboarding, and sleigh rides.

We are lucky in that we are so close to an actual ski area, the Camden Snow Bowl. And while it may not be the Swiss Alps or Colorado, it has spectacular views of the sea and surrounding mountains and plenty of trails for all skill levels. And, it’s affordable!! You can ski and get a lift ticket for about $40.00 a day on weekends and even less during the week.
